my Story

Helping you reconnect with the sounds and people you love

Hello, I'm Lucia Uys. My journey into Audiology started because I realized that hearing isn't just a physical sense - it is how we stay connected to the people we love.  Hearing loss does not just affect how we hear sounds, but the effects of hearing loss can lead to social isolation. Growing up, it was evident to me that people with hearing loss found it challenging to obtain the correct hearing aid technology to properly address functional hearing needs in everyday life.  These challenges motivated me to complete my degree in Audiology, at the University of Pretoria in 2004, to obtain a clear understanding of the Auditory system, Hearing loss and the appropriate Hearing Aid Technology. This enabled me to effectively address both the hearing loss, and the functional daily listening requirements for each individual patient.

During my 20+ years of experience, I have worked in many settings, from Private practices to special schools and each of these environments provided additional insights, valuable lessons, practical guidance and expert knowledge to be able to provide excellent service to my patients. I opened my own private practice in 2017, and I provide Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Assessments for both Adults and the Pediatric population to obtain a thorough understanding of each patient's specific hearing test results. Based on the results the appropriate referral, or recommendations in terms of Hearing aid technology, Assistive devices, FM systems or Lifestyle products can be made. The fitting of a Hearing Aid / Assistive device is not the end of the process however, as people require support and assistance during the adaptation period and if their lifestyle changes.  I am privileged to be able to guide patients through these steps to be able to reconnect with the people and sounds that they love.

Whether you are seeking help for yourself or a loved one, I am  here to guide you every step of the way toward clearer, richer hearing.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often about hearing care, testing, and hearing aids.

How do I know if I need a hearing test?

If you frequently ask people to repeat themselves, struggle to follow conversations in noisy places, or find yourself turning up the TV, a hearing assessment is a good idea.

If you suddenly notice a change in hearing levels it is imperative to have your hearing tested as soon as possible, as it might be a middle / inner ear infection.
If you experience a ringing / buzzing sound in the ear it might indicate the start of hearing loss / other conditions that might require further investigation.
If you work in noisy environments, it is important to have annual hearing tests to monitor your hearing levels and adjust hearing protection if required.
If you have direct family members with hearing loss it is good to monitor your hearing levels from a younger age.
The sooner you test your hearing the sooner you can start monitoring any decline in hearing levels or take action if required.

What happens during a hearing assessment?

A comprehensive assessment typically takes 45–60 minutes. Children's hearing tests can take a bit longer depending on their age and cooperation.

We review your hearing history, examine your ears, and run a series of painless diagnostic hearing tests to measure how well you hear different pitches, speech and speech in noise. We also assess the functioning of the middle ear. You will receive clear results and personalized recommendations on the same day.

Are hearing aids suitable for everyone?

Most people with hearing loss can benefit from hearing aids, but the right solution depends on your type and degree of loss, lifestyle, and budget. During your consultation we discuss the options that best suit your needs and functional listening requirements.

If you are not a candidate for hearing aids, but require additional technology like Cochlear Implants / Bone conductor hearing aids, we will refer you accordingly.

Do you see children as well as adults?

Yes. We provide gentle, child-friendly assessments for infants and young children, as well as comprehensive diagnostic testing for adults. Early intervention is especially important for children, so please reach out if you have any concerns.

Children are susceptible to middle ear infections / glue ear due to the small anatomical structures of their ears.  If your child has frequent upper respiratory tract infections or chronic sinusitis it is always a good idea to have their ears tested. Glue ear / ear infections cause temporary hearing loss and this negatively affects their speech and language learning.

How much do hearing aids cost?

Hearing aid pricing varies widely depending on the technology level and features you require and choose. We provide excellent hearing aid options across a range of budgets and will walk you through the differences so you can make an informed decision.

Do you offer follow-up support after fitting?

Absolutely. Fitting is just the beginning. We provide ongoing support including programming adjustments, cleaning, repairs, and guidance through the adaptation period, so your devices continue to work well as your lifestyle changes.

Do I need to make an appointment?
